Can a virus go through the ocean? (In the context of global pandemic of COVID-19)

Biology Al Qamar Academy (Small Science) Chennai , Tamil Nadu Class 4 13 March, 2020

Various types of viruses -- adenovirus, astrovirus, hepatitis A and E viruses, rotavirus, norovirus and other caliciviruses, and enteroviruses, including coxsackieviruses and polioviruses -- can be water-borne (hence, ocean-borne too). However, there is no conclusive information about whether COVID-19 can be water-borne. The virus is known to survive in freshwater (the dilution keeps risks low), but we do not know about saltwater possibilities. Most respiratory viruses spread primarily by droplet transmission, and are not necessarily infectious directly from water.

In case you are also asking whether the virus can ‘cross’ the ocean, the answer is very simple --- Yes, it can! In fact, that is how the virus has spread across the world --- along with humans crossing the ocean via ships and airplanes!
