This question is specifically interesting, given the Maharashtra government’s guidelines on restricting the use of Air-Conditioners (ACs). While there is some evidence coming in from scientists at Singapore that the virus doesn’t ‘hang around’ in the air like, say, measles, the same scientists have also reported the fact that AC vents test positive for the virus. However, whether ACs make it easier for the virus to spread is difficult to say at this point. What might ease the understanding is that COVID-19 spread primarily by droplet transmission - mode where droplets from infected people (when they cough, sneeze, etc.) infect other people when breathed in. WHO in a recommendation, has asked healthcare professionals to take precautions against possible airborne transmission of the virus. Research from a group in Italy (Leonardo Setti, University of Bologna, March 26 2020) also shows some ‘help’ that the virus may be getting from polluted air; although it doesn’t mention anything about the virus itself being airborne.
